On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you like or dislike these starters?

I don't know about you guys, but the starters all look like bootleg versions of other pokemon to me. Rowlet: Bootleg Hoothoot, but it looks like a huge troller so I like that. Litten: Bottleg Litleo , and will probably be a generic Fire/Fighting type. Popplio: Super bootleg Seel; I feel so bad for Seel and Dewgong. Popplio looks the worst to me. I feel like he's something straight out of Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki and look, proof he is: Even the legendaries look like bootleg versions of other pokemon. The Moon legendary: Bootleg Noivern The Sun legendary: Bootleg Pyroar Overall though, it probably could have been worse. I've seen some pretty cruddy fan art I'll tell you that much, but I've also seen amazing starter fanart that could make these look 10x worse than even the Unova starters. And keep in mind that all this is coming from someone whose been a huge Pokemon fan since Red and Blue. I'm still super excited for this game and stuff, even with subpar starters and legendaries thrown in. Now discuss and stuff. |

By far the worst looking starters imo. Rowlet: is alright i guess Litten: looks really boring Popplio: looks like a miscarried baby of Mr. Mime and Seal. |

They look better than the XY ones tbh. I hope their evolutions look good too. |

Looks like it will be the first time i'll pick the grass starter instead of the water/fire. |

I just hate how gimmicky pokemon designs have gotten. Like, yeah, some of the originals were terrible and stupid looking. But most of them were just cool fantasy animals. Now everything needs gimmicky ornamentation and crazy exaggerated features. Like what's with the clown bullshit on that water one? I get the whole "circus seal" thing they're going for, but it just looks stupid. I don't want to play with a stupid clown. Why can't it just be a cool seal? Dewgong was freaking awesome, and didn't need a silly gimmick. |

They should make starters of a different type. Would definitely change it up. |

Definitely a step down from Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, but those three are also probably the strongest we've seen in a very long time, so that's kind of to be expected. I still like the designs overall, and they make a really good trio. One is adorable, one is cool, and one is silly. I think something a lot of people forget about Pokemon and the starters in general is that it's a game for kids, and being able to appeal to a broad spectrum of children's personalities is important. I think this set does an excellent job of that. |

It looks like they are forsure favoring you to pick the grass flying type. Whether the started gyms will be fixated against that choice is yet to be seen but I like them. They dont feel so generic like the last few have been. These dont look like "starters" rather they look like random pokmeon you would catch. I find that a good thing but i can see where others would have a different opinion. |

The grass type looks really cool, but the other ones are mediocre as hell. 5/10. I don't like how the Grass-type is already dual Flying-type right off the bat. Considering the fact almost all Water-types can learn Ice Beam, this effectively makes Popplio already superior to both Litten and Rowlet, and if you're on the competitive scene, also weak to Stealth Rocks now. I don't think its typing will change either by the time it hits its final evolution, which is unfortunate. |

Nothing will beat the Jhoto starters, I thought the XY and black and white ones were really bad so this is a step up from them. I'm undoubtedly going with the owl one, but that's what I said about fennekin before I saw it's evolution. I've gone with the grass starter pretty much every game anyways, and I definitely like it's design so far so I think the owl guy is up my ally. Fire cat is okay, but I'm not a fan of the seel one. |

The only real problem I have with these starters is that....they don't really look like starters. Rowlet looks the early bird you'd find in route 2, Litten looks like something you'd find in a dark cave, and Popplio looks like something you'd find in an ice cavern. But who knows, they're evolutions could be super godly, say what you will about Popplio, but I think he's adorable and I'm likely picking him. ...I do want to add that I don't see the resemblance between the two legendaries and Pyroar and Noivern, like what, they're based off the same animals, like I don't associate Xerneas with Stantler. |

Water-type looks like complete shit and it's so bad it's funny. Fire-type is a fire-cat, boring. Grass-type looks.. meh. |

That may be the case, but I still think it's a strong set as a whole for how much it can appeal to a broad spectrum. I can say for sure I would've loved Litten as a kid, but now I'm kinda leaning towards Popplio cause it looks fun and silly. |

Fuck the haters, Popplio is the best starter since gen 4 Rowlet looks pretty cute too, altough I'm scared his evolutions might be ugly idk Litten looks kinda ok for now, but it might have some really epic evolutions |

If it had a smaller black nose, there'd be not much overly silly about it. But that big red clown nose is all it takes to make it too silly for most. I still like him though, and will probably choose him when the time comes, since I've made it a tradition to always go with the Water types. |

I think starters should be bright and fun to look at since they're essentially the mascots of the newest gens. You can clearly tell Popplio is meant to be a circus seal, but they could have added a bit more to his design -- like maybe a marking of some sort on his belly or a stripe down his head or the like. It doesn't have to be as noticeable as Litten, but if Rowlet didn't have that leaf bowtie its design would have been abysmal in my opinion. |

But I feel like pretty much everything else about this reveal is pretty great, including the starters. I still think Gen 1,2, and 6 have a much better set of starters, but I'd probably put them above the rest as a whole, despite being iffy about Popplio. That's just how strong the other two are. |

All the Popplio hate has got me on a meme hunting spree for the starter announcements, and things like this keep on popping up haha I almost feel bad for poor pooch Popplio. And have you by any chance seen the Japanese reveal trailer? I believe it was much more hype inducing than its English counterpart. Made me feel like I had a lot more to look forward in the game, and signaled the possible return of character customization. I mean, even if I'm not the biggest fan of these starters the game is still about much more than just them. |

In combination they definitely create a lot to be excited about. We get a more clear look at the starters and region through the English trailer, and a bit more about the character customization and potentially narrative through the Japanese trailer. Also the fact that it's based on Hawaii, a common vacation resort location, has be hopefully that we'll still see some kind of link to Kalos, like a cruise ship connecting them? I'm not holding onto that hope too much no, but with still nothing about Zygarde's alt forms in the games, and Volcanion fitting the theme of Hawaii but being a 6th Gen Pokemon, it's not out of the realm of possibility. |

There's also a few little teasers scattered throughout the latter, possibly hinting at things like the gym leaders and glimpses of a few of the new Pokemon. Maybe those legendaries you listed will be addressed in Sun/Moon, but maybe it's also a sign that Pokemon Z, or something like it, isn't completely out of the equation as well. We're also probably be getting a handsome amount of new megas, but I'm dubiously hoping we also get normal evolutions this time around, since we haven't obtained a significant amount of them since Sinnoh. |

Zard X has an amazing design, but if you play competitive, its unbelievably annoying once it sets up a Dragon Dance or two. Not many things counter it at that point. |

Yeah I'm definitely pro-Mega Evolution as well, so long as they don't start taking it ridiculous directions, like giving Pikachu a Mega or throwing tons of Pokemon fusions into the mix. Mega is a cool idea that adds to the diversity of how to use some Pokemon without really changing what Pokemon effectively is, but let's not go any more extreme than that please... |

I'm really interested to see what Rowlet's evolution look like because I thought they nailed owls with Noctowls. Hopefully they overdesign it and make it look really badass. What are you talking about. It's Rowlet who was born to be a meme |

Tyrel said: Hopefully their evolution's look way better If their evolution's look bad, then I'll just bask in the fact they at least won't be competitive like most starters anyway. Litten will probably look like a Luxray if it's not standing on two legs for its apparent future Fighting-type, and I'm terrified Popplio will just look like a sillier Walrein -- or even worse, adopt a secondary Ice-type. I have hope Rowlet's final evolution will look amazing, kind of like a combination of Pidgeot and Noctowl, but I'm hoping it somehow ditches the Flying-type along the way so it doesn't get raped by Popplio with Ice Beam. |

Calal-Chan said: Oh hey look its the I hate the new starters of Pokemon. This happens every gen. I can still remember people saying the starters of gen 6 were terrible. I didn't say I hated them; I just said they looked similar to other Pokemon we already have. I recall almost everyone was complacent with 6th gen's starters, apart from Chespin who ended up having a decent final evolution. 5th gen was pretty horrible though, but every gen before that had starters I instantly found appealing. I don't like lazy designs, especially for starters since they're the mascots for the games, but as a competitive player I don't really care what you look like so long as you do work on Showdown. |

Very uninspired. They don't give the 'starter' feel as with the first few gens of pokemon. The grass type looks horrendous, the colour palette is so plain. Fire type looks the best though. Unrelated: I hope Ash chooses the fire type as his starter in the new region. |

You have the same thoughts as me -- apart from Rowlet looking bad, I like his design leagues better than Popplio's. Litten's design is also the best looking to me. But realistically speaking, the designs could have been a lot worse. Perhaps they will have more interesting final evolution's, however. |

I am a big Pokemon fan and an advocate for Gen 1 or 2 being the best but people need to chill with the "The old designs were WAY more original" argument. Pokemon designs were never THAT unique lol.. at least not for the most part. Pidgey is a pidgeon, goldeen is a goldfish, horsea is a seahorse, ekans is a snake and muk is... muk. You get what I'm saying lol. Granted I do find that Gen 1 had the most designs I liked but still lol. These starters are ok looking.. not that bad. Better than that gen 3 remake I just got done playing a while back. Litten is a cat.... A CAT! IT'S LIT BRUH. Owl's are dope and will be the first starter that's also flying type. I always pick the water type and I won't be that mad about it this time around. |

My personal favorite gen in terms of starter design (including their evolution's) is 3rd gen. But to be honest, the amount of effort that has been put into starter designs has been on the decline since the conclusion of 4th gen. I'd very much love to see a flamingo, peacock, or lemur receive a Pokemon starter variation, or just have a Pokemon variation in general since those 3 animals still don't have any Pokemon based off them. But instead we get another cat, another owl, and the third or fourth base seal Pokemon. I'd prefer original Pokemon not based on an animal or insect myself, but we can't have everything we want in life. |

Geez. I haven't been keeping up to date in Pokemon news lately, so the fact that the new starter's designs are even out is a surprise for me. They look alright, but I definitely agree with some of the ideas stated already. Basically the early bird Pokemon for the grass type and a circus seal for the water type. Plus another cat. Not terrible, but not the best either. I just checked out the legendaries, and those are just... Bleh! |

I want Pokemon to start having a third typing -- it just seems like it's time and it's far less extreme than Pokefusions and the like. Being 6x weak to a move, and resisting moves by 6x would also be a nice mechanic to start considering in competitive play. |

I would actually like Popplio more if it didn't have those ears. Litten is just eh. I mean, look at its expression; it knows it's eh. Rowlet is also just eh. Can't decide if I feel they're better than Totodile or worse.;; |

I personally think the 5th generation of Starters are the worst starters. Seperior is legit, but I do not like the Oshawatt and Tepig lineup. The second generation starters aren't that appealing to me either when I take the nostalgia glasses off. So when I look at the 7th generation starters, I can't say they're top tier like Gen 1 & 3, but gotta see what the evolution line is like. I already like them more than gen 5 so that's a good sign. |
